Olfactory sense

Olfactory is the sense of smell. It is essential for young children to able to differentiate between taste and smell. In Montessori, we encourage children to experience different smells in their environment. The following activities to help develop our children’s sense of smell are as follows:

Scent/smelling bottles (presentation one)

The first activity with the Montessori Scent bottles encourages children to match the same smelling bottles. This is a wonderful introduction, as children will be developing their olfactory sense, they will be able to discriminate different scents, as well as they will become more familiar with different scents in their environment.

The second activity with the Montessori Scent bottles is done in a three-period lesson. The directress teaches the child the names of the different scents. By doing a three-period lesson, the child will be extending his vocabulary.
