Stereognostic sense

The stereognostic sense is the capability of recognising an object without seeing it, hearing it, smelling it, or tasting it. An example of how the stereognostic sense is used might be the ability to find and turn off your alarm clock in the morning with your eyes still closed.

We help to develop this sense in a Montessori classroom with the use of specific equipment and blindfolds. The various activities include:

Stereognostic bag (presentation one)

In the first presentation with the Montessori Stereognostic bag, children will need to feel and match the same shapes from the Blue Bag, by only using their hands. Children will be encouraged to wear blindfolds for this activity, or simply averting their eyes so they cannot see inside the bag.

The second activity is similar to the first one, this one differs as the child is encouraged to pull out two of the same shapes at the same time. The child again is encouraged to wear blindfolds for this activity or avert his eyes so he cannot see inside the bag.

Stereognostic bag (presentation three)

In this activity, the directress pulls an object out of the bag, and then the child is encouraged to find the identical matching shape from the bag.

Mystery bag (presentation one)

The Mystery bag is red in colour, and has a set of familiar objects inside it. The directress empties the objects on the table for the child to see, and names each one. She places the objects back into the bag. The child is then encouraged to put his hand inside the bag, pick up an object, and guess the name of it.

For the second activity with the Montessori Mystery bag, the child is encouraged to put his hand inside the bag, pick up an object and name it, before replacing it on the table.
