How is the first activity with the classified cards presented?

The directress introduces one set of the classified cards in this activity, for example, transportation. She begins the activity by telling the child, “this is all different means of transportation”.

She shows the child the theme card and places it at the top of the mat. She has a discussion with him about it, she ensures to use the correct terminology when doing so. She moves on to the individual cards and discusses them with the child, one by one. She involves the child as much as possible, by asking him different questions about each picture.

The directress lays each picture below the theme card one by one, after discussing each picture. She then refers back to the theme card and tells the child, “this is a picture of different means of transportation", so today we have learnt about different types of transport”.

The directress assists the child in packing the work away and makes a mental note if he battled with anything during the presentation to do a three-period lesson later on.

What does the child learn by doing the first presentation with the Classified cards?

This activity increases the child’s vocabulary, it helps the child understand more about the world around him, as well as this activity develops the child’s understanding of grouping things together.
