Storybooks (paired reading)

In this activity, the directress assists the child in reading phonetic storybooks. The child is asked to choose a book that interests him. The directress talks about the different pictures to get the gist of the story. She then tells the child that they are going to read the story together, and if he feels he can continue without her assistance then he can tap the table to let her know.

The directress begins reading with the child, she uses a soft voice when reading so it does not appear she is doing all the work. She uses her finger as a guide for the child. When he taps the table, she lets him continue on his own. If he stumbles on a word, she can assist him and let him continue reading on his own.

When the child is finished, the directress congratulates him on reading a book and helps him to pack away.
