Three-period lesson with the Montessori Tasting Bottles

The directress does a three-period lesson with the child to teach him the names of different tastes and to make him aware of different tastes. The directress may use salty, sweet, sour, and bitter-tasting bottles.

First period: the directress introduces the child to each of the tastes by dropping some liquid on his wrist one by one, she tells him the name of each liquid as she does so, she reminds the child to clean his wrist each time. She isolates each one by placing it to one side.

Second period: the directress spends a great deal of time in this period by asking the child to show her the different bottles she calls out for, the child tastes each bottle one by one, as well as the directress asks him to point to each bottle she is referring to. She may muddle the bottles up and ask the child again.

Third period: the directress asks the child if he can tell her the names of each bottle, pointing at each one as she does so. She isolates each one by placing each bottle to one side, one by one.

The directress consolidates the lesson by placing all the bottles on the mat and tasting each one. She repeats each name again to the child as she does so.
