How does the directress introduce the Montessori Bead Chains to the child?

Bead Chains introduction: stacking squares and cubes

Bead Chains introduction: stacking squares and cubes

The directress asks the child to bring his tray to the bead frame and tells him for this activity we need to use the square for each number and the cube for each number. She tells the child to take the square for each number first and place it randomly on his tray and take the tray to the floor mat.

The directress assists the child in unpacking the squares on to the mat, she shows him how to build a square tower with the squares, starting with the square of ten and building upwards to the square of one. The directress then goes back to the bead frame with the child and tells him to place the cube for each number on the tray and take it back to the floor mat. She assists him in unpacking the cubes on to the mat. The directress shows the child how to build a cube tower in the same manner as the square tower.

The directress compares the difference in the size of the two towers, therefore comparing the difference of a square of a number and a cube of a number.

What does the child learn by doing this activity?

This activity promotes order and sequencing, as well as fine and gross motor movement, this activity gives the child practice in handling the beads.
