How is dynamic addition is done with the stamp game?

The Stamp Game: dynamic addition

The Stamp Game: dynamic addition

The directress begins the activity by introducing the Stamp game to the child and reminding him of the addition (+) sign. She then reads through the operation with the child, (4276 + 1189=). The directress assists the child in collecting the correct stamps for the first addend. The child then collects the correct stamps for the second addend, ensuring the stamps are placed slightly below the first addend.

The directress reminds the child that they will be adding the numbers together, by pointing to the (+) sign. The directress begins counting the units, once she reaches 10 units she tells the child that they can change 10 units for one ten. The child then replaces the 10 units for a ten from the box.

The child places the ten with the tens and counts the remaining unit stamps. The directress then shows him where to record the answer with the green marker in the unit column. The child is encouraged to do the same with the tens. On reaching 10 tens, the directress reminds him that he can change 10 tens for a hundred. The child replaces and exchanges the stamps from the box.

The child places the hundred with the hundreds category and counts the remaining tens. The directress shows the child where to record the answer, using the blue marker in the tens column.

The child is encouraged to follow the same procedure with the hundreds and thousands (exchanging if necessary) and recording the answers with the correct colour marker in the correct column. The directress shows the child how to check the answers and helps him to pack away when he has completed the operation.
