Seguin Board B: learning quantities

How is a three-period lesson done with Seguin Board B?

This activity is done in a three-period lesson. The directress uses the wooden box, containing 45 golden beads to teach the child the names of quantities from 10-90.

First period: the directress places a ten-bead bar vertically on the piece of felt and asks the child if he remembers what it is called, once the child tells her what it is, she places it aside.

She then places two ten-bead bars in front of the child and tells him that when we have two tens we call it twenty, she lets him say twenty and then places it aside.

The directress then places three ten-bead bars in front of the child and tells him that when we have three tens we call it thirty, she lets him say thirty and then places it to one side.

Second period: the directress places all of the bars vertically on the mat so the child can see 10, 20, and 30 clearly. She spends a great deal of time in this period, asking the child to identify certain amounts.

Third period: the directress isolates the beads once again, by placing the amount to one side after she has asked him the name of each one. She consolidates the lesson if the child has grasped the concept by placing all three back on the mat saying to him ‘today we have learnt that this is… and this is… etc’.
