Spooning

Using a spoon properly and not spilling everything off the side takes practice. We’ve all seen videos of children spooning sweets or something from one bowl to another and just covering the table!

In a Montessori Practical Life classroom, you will find many different types of activities to improve development in a child, one of those important activities is spooning material from one bowl to another bowl. Children are taught not to spill things while using a spoon.

What skills do children develop when learning to use a spoon?

Children will develop many skills in doing this presentation such as patience, to spoon all of the material carefully from one bowl to another. Learning to use a spoon without spilling develops independence and a feeling that kids are able to do things on their own at home or at school. This might include spooning their own food at lunchtime or developing finger dexterity for gripping a pencil with the correct three-finger tripod-grip for writing.

Children will repeat this activity many times in a day, without them realising the very important aims behind it.
