How to walk around someone who is working on the mat

In Montessori education, children will often be working independently on the floor on their mats. Children will also frequently be going to shelves to take things and put things back. This means that there will be lots of foot traffic in the classroom, with kids walking here and there.

How children are taught to walk around someone who is working on the mat

Children need to be taught not to take short cuts and that it is not polite to walk across another child’s mat. The directress will show the children how to walk around someone who is working on the floor mat, by walking around their floor mat making sure not to disturb the child and his work. Children then copy and learn how to walk around someone who is walking on the mat.
